Do you like playing catch, racing your friends or jumping rope? I have good news for you.

Thanks to the President’s Challenge (www.presidentschallenge.org), a program designed to encourage Americans to become more active and improve their health, you can win awards doing what you like to do the most.

The Challenge (see http://www.nerdel.com/archive/vol1_number2/index.php), which started in 1956, initiated by President Dwight D. Eisenhower as a national testing program to get children to be more active, was born out of a concern for our health and receives the support of many organizations, such as The Nerdel Company, Kellog’s, General Mills and Coca Cola, all of which share the same concern.

Each year, the percentage of obese people in our country grows. The reason: we eat more; we exercise less.

The President’s Challenge, which includes a series of programs to choose from, wants to stop this trend by helping Americans of all ages get involved in some sort of physical activity. Those who are already fit are asked to take on some new goals.

Taking the six-week challenge is easy.

The rules: have fun while getting fit.

If what you like is showing off your latest skateboarding tricks, you can win an award doing so.

Skateboarding is not your thing? No worries.

Stay active walking, running, dancing… and you can also win an award.

Once you choose an activity, you need to keep track of your activity by using the personal activity log provided on the President’s Challenge website (www.presidentschallenge.org). Every time you exercise you will earn points, and after a certain amount of points, an award will be yours.

If you participate in the President’s Challenge you will also be part of an elite group that includes California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and NFL stars Eli Manning and Lynn Swan, who serve on the President’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports.

One day, you may even be as fit as these council members.

If you don’t like to exercise alone, the Challenge gives you the option to win awards while exercising in groups. You can also spread the word and get your school involved in the Physical Fitness and Health Fitness programs, which are specially designed for educators to help their students become healthier individuals.

After taking the challenge you will not only realize how much fun getting fit can be, you will also be surprised when you see that you no longer get tired after climbing a flight of stairs. You will also look and feel better.

Hurry up and take the challenge!
